Know the rules before the chainsaw starts

The ACT takes its trees seriously. Tree protection in Canberra is now governed by the Urban Forest Act 2023, which replaced the older Tree Protection Act 2005. A tree on your leased block counts as protected if it reaches 8 metres in height, spreads a canopy 8 metres wide, has a trunk circumference of 1 metre or more at 1.4 metres up, or is on the ACT Tree Register. Removing or heavily pruning a protected tree without an approved tree activity application can attract serious penalties — up to $80,000 for an individual.
