Stump Removal

Full Stump & Root Removal in Canberra

For when the whole root ball has to go — across Woden, Weston Creek and beyond.

When grinding won't do

For most Canberra yards, grinding a stump flush is the smart, economical choice. But there are jobs where the whole root system genuinely has to come out — and that is what full stump removal is for. Tree Loppers Canberra connects ACT property owners with insured, certified arborists who can extract a stump and its major roots completely, leaving a clean cavity ready for whatever comes next. Whether it is a radiata pine stump blocking a new shed footing in Wanniassa, a willow root mass undermining a Curtin retaining wall, or an old eucalypt in a Chapman backyard slated for a slab, extraction clears the ground entirely.

Three reasons to choose extraction over grinding

  1. You're building on the spot. Footings, slabs and retaining walls need solid, root-free ground. Grindings and decaying roots left behind can cause settling later.
  2. You're replanting in the same hole. A new tree struggles to establish among a dead root ball. Clearing it gives the replacement room.
  3. The roots are already a problem. Some species — willows, liquidambars, certain poplars — send out aggressive surface roots that lift paths and crack pipes. Removal takes the source out.

If none of these apply, stump grinding is usually the better-value option and the crew will tell you so honestly.

How the extraction works

The arborist assesses access first — extraction needs room for a machine and a spoil pile, which can be the deciding factor on Canberra's tighter inner-north and inner-south blocks. From there the stump is dug around, the major roots are severed, and the root ball is levered and lifted clear. The cavity is backfilled with clean soil and compacted, and the site is raked off. On Canberra's reactive clay, expect a little settling over the first wet season — an easy top-up.

Part of a bigger job?

Stump removal is often the final stage after a tree has been taken down. If your tree is still standing, start with tree removal; if a storm has dropped it, emergency tree removal makes the site safe and clears the debris first.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding shaves the stump down below the surface and leaves the deep roots in the ground to rot away naturally — it is quicker and cheaper, and ideal for relawning. Removal physically extracts the stump and its main root system, leaving a clean cavity. You choose removal when you are building over the spot, laying a slab or retaining wall, or replanting a tree in exactly the same place.

Will full removal damage my Canberra lawn or paving?

Extraction is more invasive than grinding, so some disturbance is unavoidable — a machine and a spoil pile need room to work. A good crew protects surrounding turf and paving with boards, backfills the hole with clean soil, and tidies the area afterwards. If access is tight, as it often is on older Ainslie or Yarralumla blocks, they will talk through the trade-offs before starting.

Do I need approval to remove a stump in the ACT?

Removing the stump of an already-felled tree generally does not need its own approval. The approval question applies to the living tree: under the ACT Urban Forest Act 2023, a protected tree (8m tall, 8m canopy, 1m trunk circumference at 1.4m, or on the Tree Register) needs an approved tree activity application before it is taken out. Working on a protected tree without one can attract penalties up to $80,000 for an individual.
